2020 Visions project

That you are here – that life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.”

Welcome to 2020 Visions, a collaborative project to document 2020 through the eyes of the people who lived through it.

Nobody was prepared for this extraordinary year. We have all been through so much stress, and anxiety, and uncertainty. Many people have lost loved ones to Covid; everyone has been deeply affected by the pandemic.

We have witnessed extreme political tensions and divisions, rioting and civil disobedience throughout the world, the growing influence of fringe, fundamentalist ideologies, drastic developments in the geo-political landscape, new surges of technology, and the increasingly immediate signs of climate change.

Stress and anxiety like this can be very isolating. It can make people feel that their lives don’t matter in the grand scheme of global events. Many people are lonely, and cut off, and unable to reach out to family or friends. I want to provide a place for all these voices, to let people know they are not alone; that their experiences matter.

The history books record the events of the high and mighty; the seismic moments and the big, headline-worthy stories. What they fail to capture is what was going on beyond the headlines, behind closed doors, and in the hearts and minds of the people who lived through history.

Every person on the planet has felt and experienced 2020 in their own way. Each person’s perspective is totally unique. Each person’s 2020 is valid, and important.

That’s what the 2020 Visions project is all about: creating a collective record, a wiki-diary, of the events of this extraordinary year. I am asking anyone who wants to, no matter where they are in the world, to provide their own pieces of the jigsaw, however seemingly small or trivial.

At the time of writing, in October 2020, this is at an early stage of thought – my ultimate goal is to collate all of the (anonymous) contributions I get into one place, most likely a book which I will aim to get published.

You can send your ideas in anonymously using the form box below, by email, or via the 2020 Visions Facebook page.

I am welcoming contributions in any form: words, pictures, diary-style entries, even incomplete thoughts. Ideally I would like a little bit of information about the contributors – just simply age, location, and any more details people would like to offer – but I will not be publishing people’s names, under any circumstances.

Please follow the 2020 Visions Facebook page, invite others to follow it, and share this post with anyone you think might be interested. And please also share the concept of 2020 Visions via word-of-mouth with anyone who does not have access to social media. Some of the most important and poignant contributions to this project might be from people who aren’t able to write or send in their own words, and may need help from someone to do so.

I am a freelance journalist based in the UK. I have been working as a journalist for nearly 15 years, 10 years as a freelancer. As such I am used to handling contacts and sources completely confidentially, and promise to treat this project, and the people who contribute to it, in exactly the same way I would a source.

Thank you to those who have already contributed, and to those who do as the project progresses. I will keep everyone posted as time goes one. In the meantime any suggestions or feedback are welcome.

Please use the below form to add your piece of the story. You do not need to register your email address or name; whatever you writer will come to me anonymously, and will not appear on this site.

Thank you.
